RIVET’s intended workflow brings devices, routing and arrangement into one native Linux application. The rack and music-making features below are planned.

Browse devices

Find instruments and effects in a device browser. The planned browser will keep available modules and presets close to the rack.

Add them to the rack

Create device instances, select modules, reorder the rack and bypass processing. Visual order and DSP execution order will be separate concepts.

Flip to the rear view

Move from front-panel parameters to clearly named rear-panel audio and modulation ports.

Connect real signal paths

Connect compatible ports. The processing graph will determine execution order and reject invalid cycles before publishing a new audio plan.

Arrange MIDI

Create tracks and MIDI clips, move them on a timeline, then edit notes and quantization in a piano roll.

Automate parameters

Add automation lanes for device parameters. Interpolation and sample-aware scheduling will turn editable curves into DSP control.

Mix and export

Balance channels, route to the master, then render offline to WAV using the same DSP engine. Mixer and export are future phases.

The front view is for shaping sound. The rear view is for understanding where it goes. Both will edit the same device state.

Audio connections

Typed inputs and outputs will connect compatible signals. Device selection, reordering and bypass must produce real, testable graph changes.

Modulation connections

Separate modulation ports will control eligible parameters. Port validation and cycle prevention belong in the graph, before audio processing.

From a note to an arrangement.

The sequencer will use musical ticks for editing and convert them into sample offsets for playback.

Timeline & transport

Tracks, MIDI clips, play/stop, tempo and loop regions. Playback scheduling must remain consistent across audio block boundaries.

Piano roll

Create, move and resize MIDI notes. Quantization aligns notes to a musical grid while preserving editable note and velocity data.

Automation

Parameter lanes, interpolation and tempo synchronization. Device control will be scheduled alongside notes rather than driven by GUI refresh timing.
